To read the story in the digital edition of the magazine, click here.Spring Island's equestrian facilities include a barn with 24 stalls. Fifteen grass paddocks surround the barn. In addition to these amenities, the South Carolina lowcountry offers incredible horseback rides. In particular, Spring Island features 35 miles of trails that meander through the nature preserve, which takes up almost half of the island. Writer R.J. Hardwick describes a diverse habitat of salt marsh and oak hammocks where alligators, great blue herons, deer, fox, and various species of waterfowl roam.Hardwick spoke with the equestrian facility manager at Spring Island:"This is not your typical private community that just happens to have an equestrian center. It's really part of a much broader vision. There is a distinct conservation ethic at the core of everything here," says Lucy Halstead, Spring Island's equestrian facility manager. "There is an emphasis on embracing smart land management, maintaining a viable wildlife habitat and making sure this remains a place that is wild at heart."Spring Island is a 3,000-acre South Carolina Lowcountry golf community located 25 minutes from Hilton Head and Beaufort, and 30 minutes by boat from Port Royal Sound and the open Atlantic Ocean. Spring Island is limited to no more than 410 families, with 1,200 acres protected as nature preserve. Spring Island offers the finest amenities man and nature can offer, including a world-class South Carolina golf course, freshwater and saltwater fishing, equestrian, tennis, quail hunting, a nature center, fine and casual dining options, and a wide variety of educational pursuits. http://www.springisland.com
