Spring Island home featured in County’s Best Cabins

The August 2012 issue of “Country’s Best Cabins” includes a feature story about a home in the lowcountry golf community of Spring Island. In the article entitled, Concrete Cabin, the writer states:“Coastal Living calls to mind images of well-weathered, clapboard-sides cottages… Rarely does a colder, more urban material like concrete come into view. But that’s exactly what architect Peter Brower used to create his LEED-Platinum cabin in the Spring Island community of South Carolina.”Peter Brower was quoted saying, “There are many ways that you can approach trying to achieve a particular LEED certification. What we tried to do was to build a house as efficient as possible so that we didn’t need to go to wind, solar or geothermal energy to keep costs down. We chose to take a path that did not require much energy to begin with.”This type of logic is right in line with the eco-friendly philosophy of this lowcountry golf community where, for example, corps of volunteer homeowners remove native vegetation slated to be disturbed by new construction and sell at a farmers market with the monies raised used to help fund naturalists programs on the island.Spring Island is a 3,000-acre Lowcountry golf community located 35 minutes from Hilton Head and Savannah, and 30 minutes by boat from Port Royal Sound and the open Atlantic Ocean. Spring Island offers the finest man and nature can offer, including championship golf, world-class freshwater and saltwater fishing, equestrian facilities, tennis, quail hunting, nature center, fine and casual dining options, and a wide variety of educational pursuits.
