Of its 3,000 acres, 1,200 are protected as a nature preserve with live-oak forests, freshwater ponds, marshland and pasture. The rest of the island is dotted with about 400 single-family houses and amenities that include riding rings, tennis courts, a fitness center, and an 18-hole golf course designed by Arnold Palmer. There are no commercial buildings on Spring Island. For shopping, residents head to nearby Bluffton or Beaufort, both about a half-hour’s drive away.
