The rest of the island is dotted with about 400 single-family houses and amenities that include riding rings, tennis courts, a fitness center, and an 18-hole golf course designed by Arnold Palmer. There are no commercial buildings on Spring Island. For shopping, residents head to nearby Bluffton or Beaufort, both about a half-hour’s drive away. It’s one of several Spring Island residences designed by Historical Concepts, an award-winning Atlanta firm. Floors throughout each structure are heart pine; three have screened-in porches with slanted ceilings. The compound’s central section has a bedroom, a living room with a brick wood-burning fireplace, a dining room, and a kitchen with rustic wood cabinetry, a breakfast bar and a deep farm-style sink. Each of the other suites contains a bedroom and bathroom. An office in one of the suites has marsh views along two walls.
